The letter is in the serial number, not part of the lever boss code/LBC which is a different matter. There is no LBC in 1977, 1967 was the last full year for that. The.308 was introduced in 1952, however Savage did not produce 99's in that caliber until 1955, as they had to lengthen the internal dimensions of the levergun to accept the slightly longer.308 cartridge. Savage started putting a letter in front of the serial number in 1968, and went to B, C, D etc. Each time the 6 digit serial number rolled over.

Usually, it is behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger guard on the bottom of the frame. It will appear as a small circle containing a number and a letter. The letters correspond to the years shown in the following table. Significance of the numbers is not known.' * *From page 1101 of Ned Schwing's 2004 Standard Catalog of Firearms, 14th Edition, published by Krause Publications of Iola, WI. I would like to add that I have found this circle, or oval, containing one or two numbers plus a single letter, just about anywhere and everywhere on the frame, but only on the outside of the frame, never inside. I have also found the circle or oval with letters and numbers on the barrel clusters, on the shot barrel or on the barrel assembly lug block.
Apple's gotten that down to 5.9mm thin, and that has felt perfectly alright in our hands. Here we tried to stand up the Mate X when it was unfolded in tablet mode. 1, 1995 (serial #F498821 and above). We regret we are unable to provide service for firearms made prior to this date. Discontinued or obsolete, a current model.
While the letter within the circle always match on factory matching barrel and frame, the numbers never match, or at least that has always been my experience. These Date Codes are also present on the Model 94 frames and barrels, andI am sure on many others. The marks on the inside of the frame, where the lower barrel seats when closed, are what I would call assembly stampings, and match frame to barrel, found on underside of shot barrel near forend lug, and also sometimes found on the butt stock under the butt plate. ~EE odell23- ' The following is a brief account (meaning I won't cover every detail before the internet commandos start harassing me for lack of completeness and not covering every little feature) of the groupings of Savage 24's. This is not a concrete order of which grouping came first and does not mean the whole grouping was made before the next grouping was produced and offered for sale, this is just an easier way to see all of the varieties with similar features and minimize confusing the stamped designations.
